Frequently Asked Questions

Have questions about our Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy services in Rochester, Minnesota?
Below are some frequently asked questions that we get.

How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy work?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) works by delivering pure oxygen to your body within a pressurized chamber. Under normal conditions, oxygen is transported through your body via red blood cells, but during HBOT, the pressurized environment allows oxygen to dissolve directly into the plasma. This significantly increases the amount of oxygen your tissues receive, which promotes faster healing. The high concentration of oxygen enhances the body’s natural healing processes, reducing inflammation, speeding up tissue repair, and improving circulation to damaged areas. Over time, HBOT can be highly beneficial for a variety of conditions by encouraging cellular regeneration and recovery.

What conditions can Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treat?

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is highly versatile and can be used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. It is particularly effective for chronic wounds, traumatic brain injuries, fibromyalgia, and conditions related to inflammation. Additionally, HBOT is used to aid in the recovery of non-healing wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers and burns, where increased oxygen levels promote faster healing and reduce infection risks. It can also assist in treating certain neurological conditions, like traumatic brain injury (TBI), by increasing oxygen flow to the brain. Athletes and individuals recovering from surgeries may also benefit from HBOT due to its ability to reduce recovery time and enhance overall healing.

Is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy safe?

Yes, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is considered a safe, non-invasive treatment that is widely used in medical settings. The therapy is administered in a controlled environment under the supervision of trained professionals to ensure patient safety. Although it is generally well-tolerated, some patients may experience mild discomfort due to the pressurization of the chamber, similar to the sensation experienced during takeoff in an airplane. Serious complications are rare, but in some cases, patients may feel temporary ear discomfort or sinus pressure, which can be relieved by adjusting pressure levels. Prior to undergoing HBOT, our team at Optimal Movement will conduct a thorough evaluation to ensure you’re a good candidate for the therapy.

How long is each Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session?

Each session of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy typically lasts between 60 and 90 minutes. During the session, you will lie comfortably in the pressurized chamber while breathing 100% oxygen. You may experience a slight pressure in your ears, which is normal and can be managed by swallowing or yawning. Many patients find the experience relaxing and may use the time to listen to music, watch TV, or rest. The number of sessions required depends on the condition being treated and how well your body responds to the therapy. Some patients notice improvements after just a few sessions, while others may require ongoing treatments for optimal results.

Who can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

A wide variety of individuals can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy, including those recovering from injuries, surgeries, or chronic conditions. Patients dealing with long-term pain, inflammation, or difficult-to-heal wounds may experience significant relief and faster recovery times through HBOT. Additionally, individuals with conditions such as fibromyalgia, traumatic brain injury, or chronic fatigue syndrome may benefit from the increased oxygen levels that help to promote tissue repair and reduce inflammation. Even those who are generally healthy may find HBOT helpful for boosting their overall wellness by enhancing immune function and improving circulation.

What should I expect during my first Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session?

During your first Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy session, you will be guided into the chamber, which is pressurized with pure oxygen. As the pressure builds, you may feel a popping or fullness in your ears, similar to what you might feel during air travel. This is normal and can be alleviated by swallowing, yawning, or chewing gum. Once the chamber reaches the desired pressure, you will relax and breathe normally while the oxygen does its work. The atmosphere is comfortable, and many patients find the process relaxing. You can listen to music or simply rest during your treatment. After the session, most patients feel refreshed and experience little to no downtime, although individual responses may vary depending on the condition being treated.

How soon will I see results from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

The timeline for seeing results from Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy can vary depending on the condition being treated and the patient’s overall health. Some individuals may notice improvements after just a few sessions, especially if they are receiving treatment for acute injuries or post-surgical recovery. For chronic conditions such as fibromyalgia or non-healing wounds, it may take several sessions to see significant results. The cumulative effect of multiple treatments helps your body heal more efficiently, and consistent therapy is often key to achieving the best outcomes. Our team will work with you to create a personalized treatment plan based on your health goals and the severity of your condition.
